Engine Oil Leak Oil from leaking seals and gaskets tends to move down, due to gravity, and toward the back of the engine, due to the airflow past the engine.

Because of this it’s not unusual that everything beneath a leaking seal will be wet, and although you know that the leak at the top and/or front of the engine is leaking, everything below it or behind it may or may not be leaking.

Often the only thing that can be said for sure about the other wet areas is that they are in fact wet. For this reason, we recommend fixing the known leaks, and then cleaning the engine to establish a clean slate.

After this, come back in for a future inspection after the car has been driven long enough for a leak to show itself, but not so long that everything could be so broadly wet as to obscure the source of the leak. See Engine oil seals.
